An Interview with Alex O’Neill, Director of Fairway Homecare

Can you tell us what Fairway Homecare does?
Fairway Homecare are a multi-disciplinary Care Quality Commission regulated care provider. We are primarily based in Walsall and have a branch in Sutton Coldfield and cover the Black Country and West Midlands. We have a number of important issues to address in order to maintain our service and to grow the business. Our aim is to provide real job progression and to improve our current workforce whilst also building the care team by offering a range of genuine career opportunities.

How did the SSW programme work?
Fairway Training (healthcare) Ltd approached us a few months ago to discuss our training requirements. I was really impressed withtheir approach and their understanding of our needs. We had a full organisational needs analysis completed which really made us think and review our set up in detail. We discussed options and possibilities
and reviewed the skills shortages within the business. As a direct result we identified an immediate need as it was clear that we required dementia care and end of life to meet our service user requirements, these qualifications were very attractive and incredibly beneficial. From that point, the training company went away and devised a
training plan that was suitable for our needs, it met our objectives and as importantly they understood our staffing issues and the importance of covering staff. The flexibility of the approach, the offer of delivery both on site and at the training centre were really helpful and it was also hugely impressive that we were able to deliver a large amount
of training with minimal disruption to the day to day running of the business.

What did your staff think of the programme?
We had fantastic buy in from the care staff in particular. They all wanted to improve their own skills and were very grateful for the investment in time from us. As an added incentive, we offered an hourly rate increase to everyone that completed the training and used it as a positive incentive to build on their skills.

What has been the impact?
We have had a fantastic completion rate and following training we have followed up with how effective the training actually has been and how the team have actually used the training in their day to day jobs.
It is without question one of the best things we have done and the motivation and positivity of the team have been great.

What’s next?
Following the success of that project, we identified a further need in our support worker team. These members of staff are engaged with young adults with learning disabilities, mental health issues or general
support needs and a programme of training to benefit the team to include substance misuse and infection control has been developed and delivered. Again, this was a job specific training requirement that has allowed us to directly improve our team and to up skill many of them to make them more effective and more confident in their role.

Would you recommend the programme to other employers in the care sector?
The administration of the programmes, the delivery, the support, information and guidance have been first class. I really feel that this has been a positive programme and look forward to continuing to improve and develop our team with these really valuable courses. It has allowed us to really incentivise and progress many of our staff
and has definitely improved morale and mood in the business. I would highly recommend the programme to any employer looking to developtheir staff and facilitate further growth of their business.
